Artist's comment: Danygil is primarily an artist who sees, observes and dreams. The creation of this canvas was obvious to represent the first serie of LAND OF MEMORIES, Africa.

A female slave with a contemporary face and not a face with perfect features. A crouching female slave who thinks about her future, drowned in bright and soft colors at the same time.

Artist's comment: This canvas shows the loneliness that a slave could feel, who is curled up, and that some humans being can feel nowadays.

Artist's comment: This canvas represents the gate of no return that is in Goree Island in front of Dakar (Senegal) and where non-productive slaves were send out there to die.

Danygil wanted to imbue the canvas bound bodies, refusing to die.

Artist's comment: At the beginning, Danygil wanted to depict the run of two slaves on a beach, but in vain, she imagined the inevitable. Two souls became stranted on the beach.

Artist's comment: This canvas shows the style and the identity of the serie of paintings LAND OF MEMORIES Africa such as PENSIVE, FORCE with a superimposition and a puzzle of bright colors, harmonised with soft colors. A red band covers the child’s mouth to silence. A purple band covers the forehead of the man who thinks about a stratagem to flee. They are very close, they comfort each other.

Artist's comment: Danygil has been inspired to paint the first serie of paintings LAND OF MEMORIES Africa by the theme proposed in the contemporary musical LAND OF MEMORIES: slavery. She saw and imagined her eyes closed two young slaves girls caught in a cornfield.

She wanted to show them hidden, exhausted, curled and then taken, with a light appearing on the right side of the canvas. Their life stopped at this instant. They have been caught.

Artist's comment: Contemporary canvas that depicts a slave who is waiting peacefully her fate. The colors on her body and at the background of the painting can depict her chance of a better life than other slaves.

Artist's comment: It seemed unavoidable that a canvas showing the future of Africa is created for the first serie of paintings of LAND OF MEMORIES Africa. Danygil wanted to look into the future of Africa by representing a pregnant woman where the map of Africa is drawn on her stomach.

We can imagine the birth of Africa where the vital components of survival rise with this new birth: the earth and the fertile grass, the abundance water, the dazzling light of the sun, the fire.

Artist's comment: Danygil wanted to represent humans being who go into the ocean, with the aim to disappear, before to be caught and to face their fate as slaves. For the artist Danygil, painting the sea and oceans reminds her of her father who loved the sea and oceans.
